Hillbender Ribbon Cutting

Week # 9 of the MBT Trail Crew Season!

#letemhaveit

The theme of this past week was finish work. The MBT and TBRD trail crews have been working hard to get the all new ‘Hillbender’ trail completely dialed in and are excited to flip the open signs. In addition to the 1.85 miles added, the crew will be getting started on the second installment of the ‘Hillbender’ loop this week. Beyond adding new trail, the crew has a heavy maintenance schedule coming up!

Here’s the breakdown of the crew’s week and what new trail finish work entails:

  • Monday The whole crew began their final week on the first installment of the new Hillbender trail. Shaping turns, pole sawing trail corridor and cutting hazardous stumps.

  • Tuesday The final finish work isn’t the most glamorous, but sure is necessary. The crew continued shaping berms, sawing encroaching vegetation and opening sight lines (trees, tree branches, stumps and brush) Lots of ‘sampling the product’ this week.

  • Wednesday Kevin and Jeremy of the TBRD completed machine work, working towards the top pulling large root balls on the sides of the trail and ensuring proper drainage. The crew worked behind the machines smoothing and finishing the tread. Now, ready to start moving down the North Hillbender installment.

  • Thursday Final push for both crews on Hillbender. To top off the week, the crew worked though the rain and much needed moisture for the dry and dusty fresh dirt and turns. After clearing the trail and deeming it safe and fun to ride, the crew cut the ribbon and pulled tools out for some much needed love.

  • Friday The crew took a much deserved ‘rest day’ and christened the new trail with some good times in the evening. Thanks to those who joined for the ‘pack party ride’!

  • Misc: John Borstleman continues to help manage invasives along the Ladyslipper corridor. Thanks so much JB! Nate Kirschner and crew continue backcountry maintenance with well over 100 cumulative hours dedicated to brushing and clearing trails way out back. Thanks a ton all!!
